CHANGES — From Maker to Co-Creator

CHANGES — From Maker to Co-Creator

Change has always been at the heart of LB Ceramic Art.

Almost twenty years ago, our story began in a backyard in the Netherlands, where artist Engelbert de Wit started experimenting with Raku, fire and casting clay. He was told that combining Raku firing with casting clay was technically impossible. Instead of accepting that limitation, he spent years developing his own process.

What started as an experiment became a craft. And that craft continues to change.

Today, LB Ceramic Art is no longer simply about making ceramic objects. Increasingly, our role begins much earlier: around the table with architects and designers, exploring an idea, a space or even something that has never been made before.

We have changed from maker to co-creator.

That shift has challenged us to rethink scale, construction and the possibilities of ceramic itself. A recent restaurant project in Switzerland is perhaps the clearest expression of this evolution: a sculptural Raku ceramic lamp standing 2.5 metres high.

Creating it required months of development, testing and close collaboration with the architect. Ceramic, steel, light and engineering had to become one. There was no existing solution to follow — we had to develop it together.

For us, this is what change means.

Not leaving craftsmanship behind, but using almost twenty years of knowledge to take it somewhere new. Every piece is still handmade in our atelier in the Netherlands. Every firing still involves the unpredictability of fire, oxidation and natural materials. But the scale of our thinking has changed.

At HIX, we invite architects and designers not only to discover what we make today, but to imagine with us what we could make tomorrow.

Because sometimes the most interesting projects start with a simple question:

“What if we tried something that hasn’t been done before?”
